While awaiting our dear sweet Baby 1, we were hoping for cute and genius - and it all came together in Ivo!
Yesterday, at the Early Bird Cafe for lunch, Ivo, aged 25 months, shimmied back and forth like a linguistic prodigy.
He's been drinking from uncovered, often full-sized glasses lately - and quite proud of himself. As expected, he's also been experiencing the pitFALLS of such endeavors. As a compromise, I encourage using straws. So when the waitress brought my juice, we asked her "xiao jie, ke yi dai wo yi ge xi gua shang lai ma?" Ivo said "bu yao."
Ivo has long said "bu yao" it's one of his first and favorite words/epressions (meaning "no want"). As he is now 2 and social, he's often up for participating in conversations. Whenever possible he brings up "rocket to moon," "fly," "super-anything," "Kaya-baba," animals that roar... When these topics can't be smoothly worked in, he often resorts to gestures; wild arm motions, shoulder shrugs, grimaces and highly inflected babble. When pressed for time/energy, he embraces the economy of "No" or "bu yao." So - when he said "bu yao" after we asked for a straw, I didn't give it much thought until he immediately followed up in English, "No straw."
It was awesome!

These pics are from Jan 2006 when Doug and Gail came to visit.
I've been remiss in keeping up with Vintage Ivo posts... I just forgot to do December and January. I just looked thru a bunch of pics to find these - Man Ivo's cute!
