I Da Number 1 Boy
You da number 1 Papa.
You da Number 2 Mama.
Ivo came up with this while finishing up his dinner last night.
I'm Number 2 Mama. Really? Ryan asked him where Number 1 Mama was. Ivo said, "Probably at da gwocery store."

Ivo has mostly recovered from what Dr Hsei says was probably Adenovirus. Yay! The very down side is that Burl is SICKER. I took him to the dr yesterday morning. He has some fluid in his ear, his throat is red and inflamed, he's coughing a lot, has trouble breathing cuz of boogers and overall, he just seems sick. He's all rubbery and sleepy. The dr says Burl is not as bad as Ivo was and so he doesn't need antibiotics.
The timing of Ivo and Burl getting sick this past week - capping a couple months of lowgrade cold/cough symptoms which coincided with their starting school, is freaky with the recent reports on the risks of cold/cough medicine for kids 6 and under. Cuz Ivo was prescribed antibiotics for the middle ear infection AND cuz these bugs are wearing me down, I had finally decided to give both boys the ubiquitous Taiwan-style powdered medicine wrapped in paper. Every visit to the dr results in some medicine. The medicine is mixed specially for you and theoretically addresses your specific symptoms. In the past, I always threw out the medicine - you can't not accept it. Until recently, I only ever took the boys to the dr for vaccinations or to rule out things like strep throat or tonsilitis... I never thought there was any point in medicating a virus. But this past week, I kinda shifting my thinking, deciding that it's ok for the medicine to treat/relieve symptoms rather than erradicate underlying causes. To be clear, Ivo has some cold medicine mixed in with his antibiotic. Burl just has some cold medicine. O tempores! O mores!
Yesterday afternoon, Burl got a fever. I haven't given him anything for it - the highest it's gone is 38.3 - I think 38.5 is the medicine threshhold. I may take him to dr again this morning. Karin is gonna watch boys this afternoon - so I can work. Yay!
Also, Ryan and I have pink eye!!!! And poor Ryan looks beat up.

i don't know if it helps, but my dr here is adamant about no drugs for a virus unless the virus has caused symptoms which have created an infection eg in ears or throat or chest. otherwise it's just baby panadol and plenty of fluids which may be hard given your tales of Ivo and his water refusal. The other thing that may be of interest is that as soon as their is the slightest hint of conjunctivitis (pink eye) at Cuy's daycare centre, you're not allowed back in til you've got a certificate from the dr saying you're all better, which basically means antibiotic eyedrops for four days!
Cuy's been really lucky to only have had antibiotics once so far in his short life but i found that being at daycare precipitated a whole host of illnesses for Rob and I as well. Just one of those things you go through sooner of later! good luck, hope you're all feeling better real soon. love leoniesh
